NIKOS XANTHOULIS

Premieres new music for Ancient Greek Lyre by Garry DW Judd, Thomas Bramel, Vasco M. N. Pereira, Nikolas James, Vincent Kennedy, David Martynuik, Véronique Bracco, and Nikos Xanthoulis

Seven plus one composers from six different countries create music for the ancient Greek seven-string lyre. With the collapse of the ancient Greek world in the 5th century A.D., this 'national' instrument, with which Orpheus once sang, ceased to exist. It became associated with pagan music and, like paganism itself, was forced to vanish from history. Nevertheless, the lyre has strangely continued to symbolize the essence of European music, both through painting — especially during the Renaissance — and within the collective unconscious. However, an instrument truly exists only when it has a proper repertoire written for it, and those works must be composed by skilled Musicians. As a member of the Three Essential Elements group, I reached out to my fellow members for assistance. They responded enthusiastically, and as a result, we are proud to present the world premiere performance of compositions created exclusively for the ancient Greek seven-string lyre. Nikos Xanthoulis
